UNOPS is an arm of the United Nations that provides
project-management services in every field where the UN has a
mandate – from landmine awareness to public sector reform, from
informatics solutions to poverty reduction and social
rehabilitation and reconstruction.
Upon request, UNOPS manages development projects or provides
specialized services, as needed. These services include selecting
and hiring project personnel, procuring goods, organizing
training, managing financial resources, administering loans and
fulfilling client/donor reporting requirements.
UNOPS is the largest service provider in the United Nations
system, working on behalf of more than 30 UN organizations and
departments. UNOPS also offers services to bilateral donors,
international financial institutions, developing country
governments and others in the context of UN Programmes, at their
request. In 2002, UNOPS delivered services valued at $US500
million for more than 2,600 projects around the world. UNOPS has
provided effective services for UN peacekeeping and political
missions in such countries as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Guatemala, Kosovo, Lebanon and Timor-Leste.
